Typically the SkillsUSA competitions start off with local competitions and are held somewhere in person. Students are able to highlight what they’ve learned and take pride in their work. The next level of competition will take the students to regional and then on to national locations where the competition is much larger and with groups from all over the states. During one national competition, there were more than 18,000 attendees working an event the size of 20 football fields.
The students who participate are enrolled in programs that include Auto Body Repair, Automotive Technology, Construction, Welding, Criminal Justice, Culinary Arts and more.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure and empower its members to improve the quality of our nation’s future skilled workforce. Students put their training to the test on the CTE subjects. Presentations from Mike Rowe on the importance of their skills were shown in the past and industry partner visits have been part of this tradition.
Although students could not perform their skills in person this year, they were still able to compete virtually in front of judges who gave them constructive feedback over technology. Competitions continue for the next two months. WSWHE BOCES wishes to congratulate all those who participated.
