Construction Trades instructor Ian Hamilton said of the project, “This is an amazing opportunity for our students and the WSWHE BOCES is always eager to take on real-life projects like the SHP project.” Hamilton continued, “our students stepped up and understand how important it is to help those in need.”
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need. The organization believes that a bed is a basic need for the proper physical, emotional, and mental support that a child needs. When it was brought to their attention that the need for beds went far beyond their own neighborhoods, they stepped up and took initiative. Thus, their tagline is “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town®.” With more than 200 chapters and thousands of volunteers, they are dedicated to sharing the awareness of a national problem and helping solve it.
"We have amazing sponsors and volunteers. Since our chapter’s inception, we have delivered more than 500 beds to kids in our delivery area to ensure No Kid Sleeps On The Floor In Our Town!,” said chapter president of SHP Mechanicville, James Welch. Welch worked right alongside the students and other volunteers.
In addition to the WSWHE BOCES students, volunteers from Rebuilding Together and Sleep in Heavenly Peace worked together to cut, saw, sand, stain, measure and create the beds.
Bruce Hoffmann, WSWHE BOCES Work Based Learning Coordinator said, "we are excited to partner with SHP and are grateful for the opportunity to help with their mission. We always enjoy working with industry partners, which allows our students to grow and learn valuable skills, both with equipment and life."
