Saratoga Springs, March 21, 2022 – Less than 3.4% of construction trade workers are women, according to research conducted by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, 2018 report. That number is comparable with other skilled trades when it comes to percent of women. WSWHE BOCES is focused on narrowing this skills gap. On Wednesday, March 30, 2022 the WSWHE BOCES Employment Training for Adults (ETA) will host a Women in Trades Expo.
Attendees will enjoy interactive demonstrations as well as have the opportunity to network with local business partners, learn about non-traditional careers in the trades for women, explore ETA educational programs and connect to current career opportunities with local businesses. Some of the ETA programs include CDL, HVAC-R, Construction, Wiring, Auto Technology, Machine Tool Technology and Welding.
The US Department of Labor Statistics reports that women are substantially underrepresented (relative to their share of total employment) in agriculture, mining, construction, manufacturing, and transportation and utilities. The jobs that are available and will become available are suffering a shortage and women can help fill those gaps. There are opportunities for learning and careers in these industries that we need to help women realize are out there.
“It’s important for women to know there are opportunities available to them in the trades. We want to increase participation and empower them to succeed.” said Michelle Stockwell, Program Supervisor for Employment Training for Adults.
As of this release, exhibiting companies include Barton Mines Companies, Curtis Lumber, D.A. Collins Companies, Commercial Paving Company, Eastern Millwrights Regional Council, Espey Mfg. & Electronics Corp., The Fort Miller Group, Hunt Companies, National Grid, North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, North East Fire Protection Systems, Inc., Stone Bridge Iron & Steel, Teakwood Builders, Inc., the U.S. Air Force and Veterans and Community Housing Coalition.
