Over 350 teachers and school administrators from eight North County school districts attended. One hot topic they discussed is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education as well as new research on the science of learning.
The consortium of North Warren, Johnsburg, Warrensburg, Minerva, Newcomb, Indian Lake, Long Lake and Schroon Lake schools, informally known as the True North, collaborated with WSWHE BOCES to provide the professional development to its staff.
“We have been providing support to these districts for 15 years. We brought in experts to assist with the fast growing issues around AI,” said David Ashdown, the executive director for technology & business operations of school support services at WSWHE BOCES.
An area that was emphasized was how educators can foster “Human Intelligence skills” in an AI world and create meaningful hands-on learning and educational experiences.
Michele French, the superintendent of North Warren Central School District said, “we used our joint resources to ensure our teachers and administrators are equipped with the information they need to enhance and accelerate student learning.”
Participants heard keynote addresses from several thought leaders, Travis Allen and John Almarode. WSWHE BOCES school support services staff also led a variety of workshops including, AI in the library, clean energy, tech wellness, effective communication, classroom engagement, library resources, NYSED Blue Ribbon Commission on Graduation Measures, science investigations
Ashdown said, “at WSWHE BOCES our vision is to be a trusted leader in education. By providing these opportunities and research of experts to our component districts all students will benefit.”
