Students receive hands-on experience at Wesley’s campus where they shadow staff members from the rehabilitation and nutrition Teams at the Wesley Health Care Center to learn about careers in senior care.
“The Wesley Community is proud to offer a clinical setting of study for aspiring students who want to work in the rewarding field of health care,” said The Wesley Community CEO J. Brian Nealon. “The need for nursing care will never diminish and, in fact, we are seeing a greater demand now more than ever for all phases of nursing expertise in the long-term care industry. We are excited to welcome compassionate and caring individuals who want to train here and perhaps even launch their career with us at Wesley.”
WSWHE BOCES New VisionsHealth Careers Exploration program is a rigorous one-year course offered to eligible college-bound high school seniors who plan to major in pre-med or other health-related fields. The Health Occupations program is a two-year course that offers high school juniors and seniors certifications and endorsements upon completion, as well as a pathway to employment opportunities that require further education.
"The New Visions program is able to help students figure out what field in health care they want to choose for their college path”, said New Visions Health Instructor Judy Wettig. “It's instrumental to have facilities like Wesley to collaborate with so they gain real life experience. The mentors are essential to help the students see what it's like to be a healthcare provider in different settings, so they can fund the right fit for them."
Julia Brobston, a student from Saratoga Springs in the New Visions Health Careers Exploration program said, “my favorite part of the program and being able to shadow people at the Wesley Community is exploring so many different healthcare occupations, including those I didn't know about.” She said it’s a really special experience being able to see and interact with the residents.
Hannah King, a student from Schuylerville, in the New Visions Health Careers Exploration program said, “all the sites have had great mentors and we get so much knowledge from the experiences of these healthcare professionals.”
Ashlynn Ray-Hickam, a student from Saratoga, in the Health Occupations program said, “my favorite part of doing clinicals at Wesley is being able to hang out with the residents and getting to talk with them.”
Both CTE programs provide an opportunity for students to learn from a wide range of health care professionals in a medical setting.
