School Transportation Services
School Transportation Services are among many shared services offered by WSWHE BOCES to increase the effectiveness and operational cost efficiency of local school districts. Following are the different options available.
Transportation Services
Transportation Consulting Services for transportation impact studies, route efficiency reviews, and general overview of transportation operations for districts.
Computerized Routing: Cooperative Transportation Management service provides state-of-the-art special needs routing, scheduling, and data management functions for component school districts.
Transportation: Home to School is a shared service which provides participating school districts with home to school, field trip and sports trip transportation for their public school pupils in accordance with Education Law Section 3635.
Transportation Testing & Training
Bus Driver Testing: This service enables districts to meet requirements mandated by both the Department of Motor Vehicles and the State Education Department. It provides all on-road testing and requirements under Article 19-A, Department of Motor Vehicles.
School Transportation Safety: Includes bus driver refresher curriculum and child-oriented safety materials. Seminars are available to the district-wide school population.
Bus Driver Training: The 30-hour, New Driver Basic Training Course meets the requirements of the State Education Department and is offered annually to first-year bus drivers.
Bus Driver Physical Performance Testing: The physical performance test is required to be taken before a bus driver can transport students. In addition, all drivers must pass a physical performance test every two (2) years under amended Commissioner's Regulation 156. The BOCES service provides the testing for participating school districts.
Barney the Bus: The goal of this program is to teach students concepts and skills for school transportation and to encourage children to go beyond those skills to a personal commitment to three basic values that promote life and the quality of life on the bus: safety, order and the rights of others.
Bus Attendant/Monitor Training: This 10-hour, course meets the requirements of the State Education Department and is offered annually to first-year bus attendant/monitors.
Advanced Bus Driver Course: The purpose of this course is to provide supplemental advanced skills, training and knowledge to school bus drivers interested in maximum safety and proficiency when transporting students. Class topics include:
- Handling the Bus
- First Aid for Bus Drivers
- Know Your Bus
- Emergency Planning
- Pupil Behavior Management
NYS School Bus Driver Pre-Service: This course is required by the State Education Department before transporting students.
NYS School Bus Attendant/Monitor Pre-Service: This course is required by the State Education Department before employment as an Attendant/Monitor.
